NC-AAUP
Annual Business Meeting Minutes
Saturday, April 8, 2006, North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC

NC-AAUP President Gabrielle Weinberger called the meeting to order. Minutes of the Fall 2005 meeting were approved. Treasurer Jerry Pubantz gave the treasurer’s report, which was approved. NC-AAUP has $2,900 in account with Bank of America. Anticipated revenue includes a check for $962 for a grant we received from national AAUP. The NC-AAUP Foundation account is currently at $26,000. NC-AAUP made one commitment for $500 a year for Academic Freedom Award. The treasurer’s report was approved.

Proposed changes to the NC-AAUP Bylaws were discussed, and by consensus, the vote was tabled so that language changes could be considered at the summer executive committee meeting.

NC-AAUP member Phil Carter suggested under new business that NC-AAUP work to involve contingent faculty and community college faculty, and noted that holding the annual convention at the same time the legislature was in session would be “powerful.” Members agreed that a broader convention with speakers of note would be a great idea. Carl Hughes noted that the Association of Community College Faculty is a fine lobbying organization.
Phil Carter agreed to communicate with executive committees on the matter. Carl Hughes noted that in 1983, NC-AAUP had a conference on the general topic of governance, and invited all public universities, all public colleges, and all community colleges, sent letters to their presidents, CEOs, which included 16 public and 58 community, and private universities. National speakers, a few chancellors and presidents came, he said. Jeff Butts noted that picking topics with broader interest would attract people. Jerry Pubantz noted that one business meeting a year should be sufficient.

Elections were then held, and the nominating committee’s slate of officers was elected to two-year terms, with the exception of Vice-President Kent Blevins, who was elected to fill out the final year of Carl Hughes’ term:

President – Cat Warren (NC State) two-year term
Vice-President – Kent Blevins (GWU) – filling out final year of Carl Hughes’ term
Secretary – Gabrielle Weinberger (LRC) two-year term
Treasurer – Jerry Pubantz (UNCG) continuing
Representative of Public Institutions – Minnie Sangster (NCCU)
Representative of Private Institutions – Ron Williams (GWU) continuing

Delegates to the national AAUP and to the Assembly of State Conferences were also elected: Jeff Butts (ASC), Martha McCaughey (ASC), Cat Warren (ASC), Ralph Scott (national), Nancy Scott (ASC), and Gabrielle Weinberger (national).

The annual meeting then adjourned, and the executive committee, composed of Cat Warren, Gabrielle Weinberger, Ron Williams, Kent Blevins, and Jerry Pubantz went into session. The minutes of the last executive committee were approved.
Ron Williams noted that at the January meeting the committee had agreed that NC-AAUP would ask Mickey Metcalf (GWU) to serve as Committee A liaison to National AAUP. Mickey will be starting out and hopefully taking over. It’s an appointed position.

Treasurer Jerry Pubantz said he would follow through on Hugh Hindman’s academic freedom award, as money had not come through. He also reiterated our per diems and mileage reimbursement: $.35 a mile, and a capped per diem for food: $10 for breakfast, $15 for lunch, and $25 for dinner. We also now have a credit card, in the case of lunch. If there are things that need to be purchased for the conference, Martha McCaughey has the password for the Bank of America.

The committee also discussed the foundation board, which includes Martha McCaughey, Jerry Pubantz, and Gabrielle Weinberger. Those three members need to elect four more people.

Jerry Pubantz recapitulated his “perennial recommendation” that one business meeting a year, plus a summer executive committee meeting was sufficient, and the group agreed and set Aug. 19 (Saturday) for the executive committee meeting – on the agenda what went on during the June national meeting.

Final discussion was about the spring meeting, providing training for state chapters, etc.

The executive committee adjourned.

Respectfully submitted by Cat Warren

(approved at Aug. 19, 2006 executive committee meeting)
