A brief report from the University of North Carolina Pembroke
Chapter President: John Antoine Labadie.
In the spring of 2009, the faculty of the University of North Carolina Pembroke re-formed our AAUP chapter after a fifteen-year lapse of membership. The UNCP Chapter is now vital and its membership is growing weekly. Re-establishing an AAUP Chapter will, we believe, assist the faculty in developing a clear and independent voice that will prove of great value in navigating our fluid and changeable academic environment. The primary forces driving the group of faculty to form a Chapter were a perceived lack of transparency in administrative decision-making, a lack of genuine shared faculty governance, and a lack of direct channels of communication with upper administration on the campus. Our Executive Committee has already met with the Provost, the Chair of the Board of Trustees, and has been present at a special meeting of the Faculty Senate. We have had discussions regarding our specific concerns but see real progress in these regards as something that will certainly require concerted, long-term effort. Our Chapter meetings are well attended and we are using external online resources to conduct regular discussions about our concerns among the Chapter members. We hope that our Chapter activities will help the faculty (and administration) develop a sense of solidarity about the role of the university in the 21st century and how we might address conceptual and procedural issues that appear to be impediments to our genuine communication at this time.
The 2009-2010 UNC Pembroke Executive Committee is:
